Plastic (PET) Strapping

PET  is the abbreviation for Polyethylen-terephthalat. It is fully recyclable and commonly used for manufacturing new products in a variety of industrial sectors.

When PET strapping or bottles are collected for recycling, it is first sorted into different colour categories: “transparent or uncoloured PET”, “blue and green coloured PET” and the remainder into “mixed colours”. These materials are then ground down into a flake called regrind.  PET material is especially sensitive to hydrolytic degradation so it is essential that it is really dry prior to extrusion.  Dry regrind materials are melted in an extrusion process and turned into pellets.  These pellets are then used in manufacturing to make several different materials including fibre (for clothing such as fleece or carpet), new PET strapping, thermoforming packaging sheet and even bottles.

Some interesting facts about PET recycling:

  • Nearly 900 million kgs of PET was recycled in 2014
  • 850 million kgs of recycled PET material was used in Canadian and American end products.
  • The use of PET has expanded rapidly into other areas such as containers for water, sports drinks, food products, alcoholic beverages, household products, and cosmetics.
  • PET thermoform manufacturers are using increasing amounts of recycled PET in their packaging, called RPET.  This material is predominantly black and clear and  used extensively in food packaging and nursery plant pots.
  • For every kilogram of recycled PET flake used, energy use is reduced by 84% and greenhouse gas emission by 71%.
  • The recycling of all materials creates 459,131 jobs and 10.3 billion dollars in domestic tax revenues, according to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries
